Tips for training your puppy

Tips for training your puppy:

Training should start as early as possible. Ideally, this should be at 7 weeks of age when they retain and act upon what they learn.

  • Puppy training consists of developing behaviour that will be acceptable in an adult dog. This is achieved by consistency in your training and expectations of your puppy. Do not allow unacceptable behaviour because "he is only a puppy." This catch phrase is used to excuse all kinds of unwanted behaviour.
  • Your puppy must learn the rules of your household from the first day she enters your home.
  • Take the puppy out with you in order to socialize him. Make sure all his experiences are pleasant ones - especially encounters with people. Your puppy's early associations make lasting impressions.
  • Teach the puppy where her bed is, use a word (e.g. "bed") and place her in her bed or crate.
  • Use his name and the word "come" to call him when you are going to feed him.
  • DO NOT use the puppy's name in association with discipline.
